Here, we will be discussing the biblical story of The Prodigal Son from the perspective of the mystic. And from that perspective the story is a true revelation. Keep in mind that the bible can be read on many different levels and what is interpreted comes at the level of consciousness of the reader or the interpreter..
The religious contemporaries see the story as "A story of forgiveness, redemption, and the unfailing, never-ending love of the Father who waits for each of us to come home."...Which is nice.
Sometimes the 'father' is seen as a physical father waiting for his long lost son, and sometimes the 'father' is seen as God waiting for you (the son) to come to your senses and return. But the story falls apart when the wayward son returns and gets the robe, the ring, the fatted calf and the party! The faithful son who stayed behind by God's (or the father's) side seems to have
gotten the shaft.
Now, lets see what the story reveals as viewed from a higher level of consciousness. You are the prodigal son. You are going through all the trials and tribulations of 'Life' until you have had a 'full measure'... but WHY? You return to the beginning, to 'the father', to 'the alpha and omega', where your bold and successful journey is celebrated. The son who stayed behind does not understand. He remained with his father... he was dutiful... he was faithful... he was obedient... what about him? When he questions the father about it the answer is, "Son, you are always with me and everything I have is yours... but your brother was lost and is now found"
"If you had a Billion dollars in the bank today and did not know it, you could die of starvation tomorrow"
You see, the older son, the one that stayed behind, had it all... but did not have a clue as to what he had.
If everything is perfect and bliss... how would you know it?
The only way to find out is to go prodigal.
And that is a daring endeavor!
You and I have gone prodigal... and what a celebration we will have at the journeys end!
These words from Neville's book, Awakened Imagination, reveal the truth of the question WHY?
"It is for this purpose of training us in image-making that we were made subject to the limitations of the senses and clothed in bodies of flesh. It is the awakening of the Imagination, the returning of His son, that our Father waits for."
But the victory of the Son, the return of the prodigal, assures us that the creature shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the Sons of God... Romans 8:21
" We were subjected to this biological experience because no one can know of imagination who has not been subjected to the vanities and limitations of the flesh, who has not taken his share of Sonship and gone prodigal, who has not tasted this cup of experience; and confusion will continue until man awakes and a fundamentally imaginative view of life has been reestablished and acknowledged as basic" (Neville)
